Candle Care Guide: How to Get the Best Burn from Your Candle

A beautifully made candle deserves the right care. Learn how to trim, burn, and look after your Lunivy candle so it performs at its best.

Why candle care matters

A premium candle is designed to be enjoyed slowly. The wax, wick, vessel, and fragrance all work together, but how you burn your candle makes a noticeable difference to its performance.

Good candle care helps create an even melt pool, a cleaner burn, better fragrance release, and a longer-lasting ritual. It also helps prevent tunnelling, smoking, and wasted wax.

The first burn is the most important

When lighting a new candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface before blowing it out. This helps the candle form a full melt pool and reduces the chance of tunnelling later.

As a guide, let your candle burn for around two to three hours on the first use, or until the melted wax reaches near the edge of the vessel. Avoid burning for too short a time, especially on the first burn.

Trim the wick before each burn

Before relighting your candle, trim the wick to around 5mm. This is especially important with wooden wicks, as excess char can affect the flame.

A wick that is too long may create a larger flame, more smoke, or uneven burning. A neatly trimmed wick gives a steadier flame and helps the candle burn more cleanly.

Let the candle breathe

Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from draughts, open windows, fans, and busy walkways. Moving air can cause the flame to flicker, which may lead to uneven wax melting or soot around the vessel.

For best results, give the candle space around it. This lets the fragrance move gently through the room without the flame being disturbed.

Do not burn for too long

Although it can be tempting to leave a candle burning all evening, long burns can make the vessel too hot and may affect the wick. A burn time of around two to four hours is usually ideal.

Once the room is scented, blow the candle out, let it cool, and relight it later if needed. This keeps the experience intentional and helps preserve the candle.

How to avoid tunnelling

Tunnelling happens when wax burns down the centre, leaving unused wax around the edges. It is usually caused by short burns, especially early in the candle’s life.

To prevent tunnelling, allow the wax to melt widely each time you burn it. If you already see tunnelling beginning, give the candle a longer burn next time and keep the wick properly trimmed.

When to stop burning your candle

Stop using your candle when there is around 1cm of wax left at the bottom of the vessel. Burning beyond this point can overheat the base and may damage the surface underneath.

Once finished, the vessel can be cleaned and repurposed as a small holder for matches, jewellery, cotton pads, or desk accessories.

Choosing your next ritual

Once you have finished a candle, choose your next scent based on the season or the mood you want to create. For calm evenings, try Luna’s Hold. For a richer after-dark atmosphere, explore Siren’s Lure. For fresh, open spaces, Ancestral Paths is a beautiful choice.

Final candle care checklist

  • Burn long enough to create an even melt pool.
  • Trim the wick to around 5mm before each use.
  • Keep the candle away from draughts.
  • Burn for around two to four hours at a time.
  • Stop using when around 1cm of wax remains.

With the right care, your candle becomes more than fragrance. It becomes a steady part of the evening, returning your space to calm one flame at a time.
